Selecting an Appropriate Urn

MyRestingPlace   20.04.2007

Families often spend many hours and thousands of dollars selecting the proper coffin for their deceased. However, when a person opts for cremation, the selection of an urn rarely garners the same attention. If you are planning to spread the ashes, a modestly priced receptacle will be fine, but if the ashes are going to remain displayed in your home or elsewhere, you probably will want to shop around.

Funeral urns shouldn’t just be a means of storing your loved one’s ashes, but they should also personify the person in some way. When my grandmother passed away last year, I knew I spent several days scouring local shops and the internet to find the perfect urn. While it was certainly an arduous process, finding an urn I knew my grandma would love served as a way for me to get some closure.

Modern Day Funerals

It is only natural to think about death and the impact it will have on those who are close to us. Humans have manifold ways of coping with death, and a recent study has found that other primates exhibit similar rituals. The exact ceremony and rites will vary depending on the culture, religion and the personal preference of the person, but several elements of funeral ceremonies usually remain consistent.

One of the main things to consider is whether to have a traditional burial or opt for cremation. In this day and age, more and more people are turning to cremation as an efficient and cost effective alternative to a customary casket and burial. There are several other benefits to cremation as well, such as being able to select a custom funeral urn and choosing a specific location to spread your ashes.
